Description
Indications:
Citalopram is indicated for the treatment of major depressive disorder (MDD), general anxiety disorder (GAD), panic disorder, and obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). It helps improve mood, sleep, appetite, and energy level while decreasing anxiety and nervousness.
Mechanism of Action:
Citalopram works by increasing the levels of serotonin, a natural neurotransmitter in the brain. It selectively inhibits the reuptake of serotonin in the synaptic cleft, enhancing serotonergic activity and stabilizing mood.

- Gradual dose reduction is advised when discontinuing to avoid withdrawal symptoms
Possible Side Effects:
Common side effects include nausea, dry mouth, drowsiness, increased sweating, and insomnia. Rarely, it may cause QT prolongation, serotonin syndrome, or suicidal thoughts in young adults.
