Description
Indications:
- Plaque psoriasis
- Atopic dermatitis
- Allergic contact dermatitis
- Lichen planus
- Eczematous conditions
- Other inflammatory and pruritic skin disorders responsive to corticosteroids
Mechanism of Action:
Halobetasol Propionate acts by inhibiting the release of inflammatory cytokines and mediators via suppression of the phospholipase A2 enzyme pathway. This results in decreased swelling, redness, and itching in the affected skin. It also suppresses the immune response and reduces the formation of inflammatory infiltrates.
Key Benefits:
- High-potency corticosteroid with rapid onset of action
- Effective in managing severe or resistant skin inflammation
- Reduces erythema, edema, itching, and discomfort
- Well-formulated cream base for smooth application and absorption
- Suitable for short-term use under physician guidance
Dosage & Administration:
Apply a thin layer of the cream to the affected area once or twice daily, as prescribed. Rub in gently and thoroughly. Do not use for more than 2 consecutive weeks unless specifically directed. Do not use more than 50g per week due to risk of systemic absorption.
Precautions & Warnings:
- For external use only
- Avoid application to face, groin, or underarms unless directed by a physician
- Not to be used under occlusive dressings unless advised
- Prolonged use may lead to skin thinning, striae, or local atrophy
- Use cautiously in pediatric patients and avoid in children under 12 years
- Discontinue if signs of hypersensitivity or irritation develop
Side Effects:
Possible local side effects include:
- Burning, itching, or irritation at application site
- Skin thinning or discoloration
- Stretch marks (striae) with prolonged use
- Folliculitis or acneiform eruptions
- Secondary infections due to immunosuppressive action (rare)
Systemic absorption leading to adrenal suppression is rare but may occur with excessive or prolonged use.
Storage:
Store below 25°C. Protect from heat and direct sunlight. Keep the tube tightly closed and out of reach of children.
