Description

Indications

Clonazepam is primarily indicated for the treatment of seizure disorders, including absence seizures and Lennox-Gastaut syndrome. It is also widely prescribed for panic disorders, anxiety disorders, and certain movement disorders. Its anxiolytic and anticonvulsant properties make it effective in various CNS-related conditions.

Mechanism of Action

Clonazepam is a benzodiazepine that enhances the activity of gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA), an inhibitory neurotransmitter in the brain. This increased GABA activity helps in stabilizing nerve activity, leading to its anticonvulsant, anxiolytic, muscle relaxant, and sedative effects.

Key Benefits

  • Controls and prevents different types of seizures
  • Provides rapid relief from acute panic attacks and anxiety symptoms
  • Helps manage movement disorders like akathisia and myoclonus
  • Offers long-lasting therapeutic effects with a relatively safe dosage range

Dosage & Administration

Dosage should be individualized based on the patient’s condition, age, and response.
Adults (Seizure disorders): Starting dose usually ranges from 0.5 mg to 1.5 mg/day, divided into multiple doses, with gradual titration as needed.
Pediatric Use: To be determined by a specialist based on body weight and seizure type.
Tablets should be swallowed whole with water and may be taken with or without food.

Precautions & Warnings

  • Should not be used in patients with severe liver disease, narrow-angle glaucoma, or hypersensitivity to benzodiazepines.
  • Use with caution in elderly patients due to increased sensitivity to sedative effects.
  • Risk of dependency, withdrawal symptoms, and CNS depression increases with prolonged use.
  • Concomitant use with opioids, alcohol, or other CNS depressants may result in severe respiratory depression or sedation.

Side Effects

Common side effects may include drowsiness, dizziness, muscle weakness, and fatigue. In some cases, behavioral changes, coordination problems, or memory issues may occur. Serious side effects such as respiratory depression, dependency, or suicidal thoughts are rare but possible with misuse or high doses.

Storage

Store in a cool, dry place below 25°C. Protect from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
