Description

Indications

• Treatment of primary hyperlipidemia (Types IIb, IV, and V)
• Reduction of triglyceride levels in patients at risk of pancreatitis
• Adjunct to diet for reducing the risk of coronary heart disease
• Management of patients with mixed dyslipidemia and low HDL cholesterol

Mechanism of Action

Gemfibrozil activates peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor-alpha (PPARα), which increases the oxidation of fatty acids and reduces the hepatic secretion of VLDL. It also enhances the synthesis of apolipoproteins A-I and A-II, thereby increasing HDL cholesterol.

Dosage & Administration

• Not recommended for use in patients with severe hepatic or renal dysfunction
• Caution in patients with gallbladder disease
• Avoid concomitant use with statins due to increased risk of myopathy
