Terbinafine Tablets are systemic antifungal agents used for the treatment of fungal infections of the skin, hair, and nails. Available in 250 mg and 500 mg strengths, Terbinafine is a highly effective allylamine antifungal that provides fungicidal activity against dermatophytes, molds, and certain yeasts. It is particularly effective for stubborn and recurrent cases of onychomycosis (nail fungal infections) and tinea infections that do not respond to topical therapies.

Description

Indications:

  • Treatment of fungal infections of the skin and nails, including tinea pedis (athlete’s foot), tinea cruris (jock itch), and tinea corporis (ringworm)
  • Management of onychomycosis (fungal nail infections)
  • Effective against dermatophytes, yeasts, and molds

Mechanism of Action:

Terbinafine is an allylamine antifungal that inhibits the enzyme squalene epoxidase. This leads to a deficiency in ergosterol, a key component of fungal cell membranes, and an accumulation of toxic squalene within fungal cells—ultimately causing fungal cell death.

Key Benefits:

  • Broad-spectrum antifungal activity
  • Fungicidal against common skin and nail fungal pathogens
  • Fast symptom resolution in most dermatophyte infections
  • Suitable for short- and long-term therapy

Dosage & Administration:

  • Adults:
    • 250 mg once daily for 2–6 weeks (skin infections)
    • Up to 12 weeks for nail infections
  • 500 mg strength may be used in severe or resistant cases as advised by the physician
  • Always follow your healthcare provider’s instructions

Precautions & Warnings:

  • Use with caution in patients with liver dysfunction
  • Regular liver function monitoring is recommended for prolonged use
  • Avoid alcohol during treatment
  • Not recommended during pregnancy and lactation unless advised by a doctor
